5 out of 5 stars great music, great remix job   January 6, 2009

when I bought first releases of Genesis "Trespass" and "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" CD set I was full of expectations about increase of sound quality. Trespass was a low cost production and through vinyl version sounds come out confused, low equalized, unclear. Trespass is really a great album with its acoustic feeling and misterious atmospheres. but original analog sounds recording and mixing was really bad. With first CD version all my expectations was unattended. The same was with The Lamb". the results was worse than original: a complete disaster. This box is the answer for me. Trespass is reborn and all other of four albums are a unique listen experience. great mix job. new arrangements, new equalization and, last but not least, great look (both CD and DVD are painted with original "Charisma label"). Even if you listen through a stereo set the result is astounding. In the DVD you can find Dolby Digital version of albums and some original video clips (there's a great good quality complete Supper's Ready suite video clip). If you love "Gabriel Genesis" jobs like me this set is for you. Sorry for bad english/american (I'm from Italy). Ciao.

1 out of 5 stars Speechless   January 2, 2009

I couldn't even get through Nursery Cryme. I really tried to enjoy it and from reading the reviews here I guess that some people like the classic music they love to be remixed like this, but I just can't believe anyone who knows these albums could think this sounds good. I see some people even call this superb? Maybe if you had never heard these albums and didn't know how much better they sounded before? OK, maybe some of the early albums weren't the greatest sounding records to begin with but they worked for me, and I'm speechless that they could sound this bad. I am amazed that this has any good reviews if we are talking about sound. I couldn't stand the way Trespass or Nursery Cryme sounded. I don't even want to hear any more.

5 out of 5 stars Raising the bar for archival releases   January 2, 2009

This is the third and final of Genesis' "complete studio works" CD box sets to be released (although chronologically it is the first). The quality of these box sets establishes a new standard of excellence for archival compilations of rock music. Rhino Records and the band members are to be congratulated for giving fans the ultimate treasure trove of Genesis music. The sound quality is superb, and the graphics and packaging are very attractive, with all the original album art included, including faithful reproductions of the Alice in Wonderland-inspired Famous Charisma record label on the discs. A 44-page color booklet is also included.

Genesis 1970-1975 is the crown jewel of the three boxes (actually cubes). This one compiles the early-output of this English progressive rock band - the period when Peter Gabriel was the lead singer. Since I assume that 99 percent of people considering a purchase of this magnitude (nearly $100 as of this writing) are already fans of the band, my comments will not be a critique of the music, which is superb, but will rather focus on the details of the package.

This box set contains the band's second through sixth studio albums: Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Like the other two boxes in the series (Genesis 1976-1982, and Genesis 1983-1998) it also includes a bonus CD of rarities, in this case comprised of BBC performances, demos and a couple of non-album b-sides. The band apparently did not consider their first album, From Genesis to Revelation, issued in 1969, worthy of inclusion in the box. I disagree with that decision, and its absence constitutes my only major criticism of the box. At the very least, several of the better tracks from "Revelation" (such as When the Sweet Turns to Sour) should have been included on the rarities CD, which had plenty of space, since it runs only about 40 minutes or so.

Each album (including the rarities CD) is a double-disc affair (or triple disc in the case of "Lamb," a double album requiring two CDs). For each album, the first disc is a CD of the original record, with sound quality that is greatly improved from the first-generation CDs I had in my collection. The second disc is a DVD which contains the album in surround sound and bonus video interviews with each band member discussing the making of the album. There are also performance videos on the DVDs of all but the first two albums. I don't have a DVD surround-sound system, so I can't comment on that part of it, but the interviews are fascinating. All band members, past and present (with the exception of early, short-term drummers) are included, and all are quite candid in their remarks. When taken in totality over the three box sets, you get what is essentially an insiders' oral history of Genesis from the band members themselves. Most interesting is the discussion about the making of the "Lamb" album and the factors that prompted Gabriel to leave the band just as it was finally achieving commercial success both in Europe and America.

I never saw Genesis live until just after Gabriel had quit the band. Drummer/back-up singer Phil Collins then took over lead vocals, eventually leading the band to massive worldwide commercial success. So the performance videos from this era are a huge bonus. The quality of the videos - most of them from European TV programs - range from somewhat dodgy to very good. One can only laugh at some of the low-budget attempts by the TV studios of the day to add quasi-psychedelic touches to the band's performances - which seem especially ludicrous when contrasted to the stunning stage visuals that were part of the band's tour last year. It is such a windfall to finally see Gabriel in his fox-head mask, old man make-up or "Slipperman" monster consumes, not just singing, but acting out the roles. Too bad that Musical Box and Super's Ready are repeated so often, but they are two of my favorite Genesis numbers.

As much as I love Collins' vocals, I still have a slight preference for Gabriel as a singer. So, if I were going to own only one of the three boxes, this would be the one. But the 1976-82 music is also essential for any fan of the best British progressive rock. I would rank the 1983-`98 era box - with the multi-platinum Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance albums, third in order of quality, but it too is well worth the purchase.

1 out of 5 stars Nick Davis used to be a great engineer... what happened?   December 31, 2008
6 out of 11 found this review helpful

Nick Davis has done amazing work in the past. Actually, ALL of his work up until these Genesis remixes was excellent! Has he lost his touch? Why do these Genesis sets sound so harsh? I wonder what Nick's reasoning for this is? Does he even realize this work is much worse than what he's capable of? He's a world class engineer so why did he make so many newbie mistakes with these Genesis remixes? Too much EQ? Really? That's what interns do when they're learning how to mix.

It's not the compression that makes these remixes bad, it's all the console EQ that was added that makes them sound shrill and hollow. Lots of top and bottom end boosting going on. I know that sound well from my early days of learning how to mix (on this same SSL console I might add). I was trying to make everything as punchy and aggressive as I could and my mixes came out sounding just like these Genesis remixes. When you have that much EQ on EVERYTHING things are going to sound a bit off.

Those SSL EQs have a very distinct sound to them, so do the compressors on the channel strips. Nick Davis just wanted these things to jump out at you and in the process he over-did everything. I think he was simply trying too hard to impress everyone with brute force and not sound quality. If you dig it, good for you. I can heard the EQs ringing and that really bothers me but the lack of good midrange and the shrill top end make my ears shut down.
