Amazon.com You may think the world doesn't need another adaptation of Jane Eyre--but you're wrong. This new and wonderfully lush Masterpiece Theatre version, directed by Susanna White (who directed the equally sumptuous miniseries of Bleak House starring Gillian Anderson), contrasts Jane Eyre's vivid inner life with the harshness of her outer life; both Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia) as the young Jane and newcomer Ruth Wilson express the inner vitality of the outcast orphan girl whose spirit captures the heart of the rough, charismatic landowner Mr. Rochester (Toby Stephens, Die Another Day). Stephens, it must be said, is far too conventionally handsome for the part, but he makes up for it by capturing Rochester's abrasive and mercurial temperament. (Wilson's looks are perfect; at one moment she seems awkward and homely, at another utterly luminous.) Jane Eyre is so often remade because the story is so potent; this production brings all of the novel's juice and passion to the fore, emphasizing the characters' sensual experience while staying true to the restrictions and mores of the period. All in all, exceptional. --Bret Fetzer

By Far the Best January 1, 2009 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am a die hard Jane Eyre fan and have collected many versions of the tale as it has adapted to the screen. Of all the versions I have viewed, Masterpiece Theatre's by far takes the cake. After renting it I just had to own it, and from now on this will be the version I watch. Toby Stephens is handsome, but somewhat rugged at the same time. And Ruth Wilson's Jane is by far the best--she shows an incredible array of emotions, and you truly get the same feeling you did when reading the books of the love she holds for Mr. Rochester. This version far exceeds the 1980s rendition from the BBC with Timothy Dalton. If you love the book and want to see your favorite love story adapted perfectly to the screen, this is your best choice.

Excellent, well-produced screenplay and movie. Sexy without showing skin. Thoughtful and relevant, especially for any woman who may be thinking she has to compromise her standards to get the guy. I highly recommend it!
Absolutely Wonderful December 31, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am a die-hard Jane Eyre fan, and Masterpiece Theatre definitely impressed me. Toby Stephens captures Mr. Rochester's character perfectly, and Ruth Wilson carries out the challenging role of Jane Eyre with grace and naturality. The only thing that I didn't like is that Jane and Mr. Rochester are much more physical than they are in the book, but it doesn't distract from the original story. I would recommend this adaptation to anyone who has read the book!
A diffrence of opinion December 18, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Realitives told me how good this movie was and so I decided to buy it. However, in my opinion it wasn't worth the money I spent on it. I was sadly disappointed in this purchase.

This is my favorite version of the book brought to movie. The charactors look the part and while there ae some adaptations, as can be expect with all book to movies, they are not ones that drasticly alter the feel or story. So far the best one to truely cature Bronte's passonate love story.
