Amazon.com The sleepy English village of Dibley gets shaken up when their new vicar turns out to be a woman--and not just any woman, but Geraldine Granger, played by Dawn French of the peerless comedy duo French & Saunders. With wit and warmth, Gerry swiftly trumped her parishioner's chauvinism and turned British sitcom The Vicar of Dibley into a cult favorite. Over the course of 16 episodes and specials, Gerry grappled with everything from a broken church window to getting smeared in the tabloids, from the demise of the Easter Bunny to the possible destruction of the village. While The Vicar of Dibley routinely trafficked in the absurd--pop star Kylie Minogue happens to drop by, just when she's most needed--at its best, the show found its greatest absurdity (and its greatest humor) in the everyday life of an English village and the everyday quirks of its daffy inhabitants. While the brilliant French was unquestionably the axis on which the show happily spun, much of its success was due to the clever writing (Vicar was created by Richard Curtis, who wrote the screenplays for Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Love Actually) and a rock-solid comic ensemble, including Emma Chambers as Gerry's dim-bulb assistant Alice; Gary Waldhorn as the pompous landowner David Horton; James Fleet as his none-too-bright son Hugo; and Roger Lloyd-Pack, Trevor Peacock, Roger Bluthal, and Liz Smith as maddeningly eccentric villagers. It's no wonder the show has inspired devoted fans on both sides of the Atlantic; from the clever stories to the joke that follows the credits of every episode, The Vicar of Dibley is sheer delight. --Bret Fetzer
Description The sleepy village of Dibley has a new vicar, but it's not your standard order bloke with beard, bible and bad breath - it's Dawn French, of the hilarious comedy duo French and Saunders. Armed with a sharp wit, a double dose of double entendre and healthy

Go ahead and buy it, you won't regret! November 11, 2008 I love this series. Love it, so much, even more every time I re-watch it. I love throwing it in the player and just having it on in the background while I clean and putter around the house. It's gold, pure gold, every minute.
Watching this little village full of twits stumble around happily while Gerry and David war in the center of it all (sane and a little frightened), is such a joy, I never get sick of it.
I don't get most of the Britain-specific references, but it doesn't matter one bit. I recommend it without reservations. Go on and get it, you'll love it! :)
If you like the English. you'll love these DVDs. January 12, 2008 Stationed in the USAF in England for seven years and marrying my wife who is English, we are enjoying the DVDs very much. They are great!!! The voices of the characters remind us so much of friends and family still living in the UK. The service in receiving these DVDs was truly outstanding as usual.
Laugh until you cry! January 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this collection for my husband as part of his Christmas present. We have watched a lot of the episodes already on PBS television, but have never got tired of seeing repeats. We sat on Christmas night with our daughter, laughing our heads off. This is a brilliantly funny series and Dawn French is amazing. I would highly recommend it as a good mood booster
Splendid! December 23, 2007 Finding quality programming on TV is becoming a major hassle. Either you're deluged with a million variations of CSI or Law & Order that deal with rape and semen, or mindless reality tripe that would only be entertaining to a stoner.
It's great to be able to pop in the DVD and enjoy actually entertaining programming that doesn't rely on brutal murders or horrific acts of sexual sadism to capture the audience's attention. You can watch this show with your family, with your friends, with people you've just met, and the response is the same. Pleasure, enjoyment, laugh out loud moments, and best of all, no uncomfortable queasy awkward situations as some gun-toting character yammers on about male on male rape.
If you actually want a really entertaining show to watch, the Vicar of Dibley (as well as other Britcom classics) are worth it.
Loads of fun October 21, 2007 This British TV comedy series is filled with unique and outlandish characters, crazy story lines, loads of dry humor and hours of fun! The ending joke is a great way to wrap up each episode. Enjoy!
