Amazon.com Monarch of the Glen: Series Four includes some of the long-running British series' finest episodes, quite an accomplishment since the drama-comedy was regrouping a bit at this stage following the departure of a major cast member, Richard Briers, at the end of series 3. The loss of Briers, who played eccentric aristocrat Hector MacDonald, actually ushers in numerous, fresh story opportunities, beginning with the rocky engagement of Archie MacDonald (Alastair Mackenzie)--Hector's son and the new Laird of Glenbogle, the immense estate in the Scottish Highlands--and Lexie (Dawn Steele). With the mantle of responsibility and privilege passing to a new generation, Archie's mother, Molly (Susan Hampshire in especially golden form), is ready to let Lexie take her place at the laird's side. But Lexie, longtime cook and housekeeper at Glenbogle, isn't ready to marry into management, and has her doubts that the often ambiguous Archie is serious about staying with her. Lexie's confidence isn't helped by the return of Archie's girlfriend from series 1 and 2, schoolteacher Katrina (Lorraine Pilkington), who wants to win him back. Meanwhile, grizzled gamekeeper Golly (Alexander Morton) takes issue with Archie's plan to turn Glenbogle into a wolf sanctuary in order to attract grants and tourists, and he feels increasingly superfluous in the MacDonalds' plans to modernize the estate. Ever-boyish handyman Duncan (Hamish Clark) tries setting Golly up with Glenbogle's attractive new cook, Irene (Rebecca Lacey), but (despite a significant difference in age and experience) she really rather fancies Duncan himself. Hector's lifelong chum, the goofy but goodhearted Kilwillie (Julian Fellowes), struggles in vain to let his true feelings for Molly be known, while Molly busies herself with the many changes taking place in her family's life. The show's writing has never been stronger or performances more winning as Monarch of the Glen enters the middle of its run, heading toward a pivotal event that threatens to topple everything at the season's end. --Tom Keogh

Monarch of the Glen December 21, 2008 This is a delightful series chronicalling the lives and loves of the residents of Glenbogle estate in Scotland and the efforts of it's heir, Archie, to keep the old castle financially afloat in a modern world. Start with Series One. You'll enjoy watching their lives unfold.
Monarch of the Glen - Series 4 October 31, 2008 I really enjoy this dvd. I have series 1,2,3,and now 4. I won't rest until collect all 7. The characters are so real and the scenery is breathtaking. I shared the dvd with 2 work friends and we all want to live in Glenbogal. The second disc had some problems but customer service is taking care of the problem in a very courteous manor. Thanks
A vey well loved series September 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I own the entire Monarch of the Glen series. It is intellectual in that it hits all of Scotland's current issues, but also tremendous fun, with beautiful real scenery, great actors, good stories, no nudity and no gore.
The Beginning of the End... May 2, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The passing of Hector at the end of Season 3 was also the death of this delightful and endearing series. The writing and direction in Season 4 is unpredictable and the characters lose their quirky, lovable shine as they constantly act in ways that are contrary to the characters we grew to know in Seasons 1-3, often with little rhyme or reason. It begins to feel as if the writers and director had not actually watched the first 3 seasons.
From Season 4 onward, there are several new characters and story arcs and the series becomes a completely different show. Season 4 is the transition to the "new" Monarch of the Glen that is seasons 5-7 and a rocky, troubled transition it is.
Monarch of the Glen - Series Four January 20, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I watched this on TV in the UK and the series is not actually completed on the DVD series. Most unfortunate. We are left high and dry because of the lack of the last (possibly) two or three episodes. Such a shame for a great and repeatable series.
