Amazon.com The third season of Monarch of the Glen, the delightful BBC-1 comedy, finds the fortunes of Glenbogle estate--jewel of the Scottish Highlands but a financial disaster--in a period of transition. On the one hand, Glenbogle's once-reluctant laird (i.e, family head and overseer of vast holdings), the former trend-setting restaurateur Archie MacDonald (Alastair MacKenzie), has settled into his leadership role for good. Archie's cantankerous, old-school aristocratic father, Hector (Richard Briers), is finally resigned to Archie's ambitious plans to save Glenbogle from bankruptcy by turning the MacDonalds' ancient castle into a tourist attraction. The estate's longtime staff--sexy Lexie (Dawn Steele), housekeeper and cook, grizzled gamekeeper Golly (Alexander Morton) and boyish handyman Duncan (Hamish Clark)--are more like family to the MacDonalds than ever. On the other hand, change is in the air. While it took two seasons for Archie to win the heart of land-rights activist Katrina Finlay (Lorraine Pilkington), it takes less than half the first episode of series 3 to lose her to an important political job in London. That leaves Archie's door open to a new relationship with an attractive adversary, a role instantly filled by the arrival of Stella Moon (Alexandra Gilbreath), a bank executive sent to seize control of Glenbogle's operations. For much of series 3, Stella is at such odds with the MacDonalds' free-spending ways that she antagonizes everyone (except Archie's enchanting mother, Molly, played by Susan Hampshire), resulting in a staff strike and the arrest of Hector himself for stealing salmon from his own river. In time, however, lonely Stella is swayed by the MacDonalds' loyalty and eccentric passions, while Archie's steadfastness and decency stir deeper feelings. Lexie, meanwhile, already in love with Archie, mounts her strongest campaign yet to win his affections. As always, the lives and loves of Monarch's supporting players prove exceptionally interesting and colorful. Series 3 introduces Golly's long-estranged daughter and Duncan's beautiful French pen-pal (who thinks Duncan is Glenbogle's laird), as well as a cad whose romantic pursuit of Lexie is tied to a dastardly plot to develop MacDonald land. The challenges never end for Archie and company, but the bonds between these wonderful characters grow deeper and sweeter. --Tom Keogh

Monarch jumps the shark August 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Monarch of the Glen is the ongoing story of a Scottish highland clan struggling to save their ancestral home from massive debt and increasing commercialization. The first two seasons were a charming mix of drama and comedy, neither too weighty nor too absurd, and a refreshing change from everything else on television.
I didn't notice if the writers changed, or if the producers started diverging from the original novels, but for whatever reason the show has started to lose its touch. With certain supporting characters from previous seasons now gone and the action centering more on the estate, a formula has begun to show. Generally, some outsider arrives to threaten some kind of legal action, things look bleak for awhile, and then the family and staff pull some sort of miracle in the last fifteen minutes to save the day.
A bank representative is assigned to stay at Glenbogle estate to get it running properly and formulate a plan to keep it economically viable. At first she seems harsh but is doing what must be done to keep the MacDonalds from losing their home entirely. But by the end of the season, after a contrived romantic subplot comes into play, she becomes completely unsympathetic. In one episode, she sabotages a major estate event so that she will have to spend more time with the MacDonalds. Her reasoning is illogical, her motive is unconvincing, and her plan requires the rest of the cast to act idiotically out of character, which they do.
Another particularly poor episode focuses on Duncan the handyman, whose French pen pal surprises him by telling him she is coming to visit. If you guessed that he lied to her about what he does for a living, and now has to find a way of covering it up, then you too know how many times this kind of story has been done in sitcoms past. It's the kind of story that should be beneath a show like this. It takes the "comedy of errors" too far into the realm of silliness.
The season ends with the cartoonish death of one of the main characters and an out-of-the-blue marriage proposal. (Marriages are never good for television series. Let's hope a baby isn't in the works as well.) The show is becoming a parody of what it once was and while some of the episodes are still moderately enjoyable, it has lost what once made it great.
Monarch of the Glen: Season 3 January 20, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This picks up directly after the events of Season 2Monarch of the Glen - Series Two. Archie needs some serious financing of his estate and quick. The bank sends out Stella Moon an accomplished executive/BOW(depending on your perspective). Throughout the season she has mandates and proposals that go against the Glenbogle household. Alexandra Gilbreath is a good addition to the cast. However, the show's writers did not seem consistent with her character development. An ambitious woman can fall in love. In one episode she was intentionally sabotaging her chance for a huge career advance. For what? She had fallen in love with Archie/Glenbogle. No promise of a ring. If she is having conflicts make it without having to suspend too much disbelief.
Simon Weir was also a good addition as the cad/developer, Stuart MacIntosh. You wanted him to be just the honest business/love rival to Archie.
I know many people are dismayed by Archie's emotional density, I found this to be positive. It established consistency to the story. After all, it shows he's a chip off of the old block of Hector MacDonald.
Susan Hampshire continues to be excellent. Julian Fellowes as Hector's frenemy Kilwilly adds to the cast. Hamish Clark, Alexander Morton, and Dawn Steele as the household adds to the series.
Katrina Finlay's(Lorraine Pilkington) exit did not affect myself as much as others' exits.
Monarch of the Glen has a character for everyone.
Good Highland Dram September 19, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this good highland drama so far. The plots have been intreasting, and there is always romance. So far so good!
Series 3 - Best of the Best. August 24, 2007 My wife and I own all DVD's available in this series and absolutely love them. Series 3 remains my personal favorite. The characters really seem to hit their stride and settle into their rolls in 3.
I like the tension that Stella Moon brings to the storyline and how could you not wish Hector was your own Granddad? Unlike others, I wasn't invested in the Katrina / Archie relationship and wasn't bothered by Katrina's departure. I was, however, terribly sorry to see Hector go. Series 4 and beyond seemed to lose their center of gravity without Hector.
The writing is consistently good in all episodes, but series 3 seems to have more continuity and flow to the overall story. Can't understand the negitive reviews of others.
Believe me, skip this one April 9, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I watched series 3 very soon after greatly enjoying the first two series. Disappointment is the only word for my reaction, and I'm trying to imagine why so many reviewers liked it. Only the beautiful scenery and Molly are there to recommend "3". It is as if all the humor and energy of the other main characters had been drained. Plots got very serious (new writers, surely), and the addition of the new bank character added gloom (she seemed to be in some psychological drama, not "Monarch"!). Romance in these episodes is unconvincing, and, after the tragedy at the end, there is no mention or appearance of the daughter and grandchild or other key characters in the first two series -- unforgivable! If you loved the first two seasons, as I did, then remember them fondly and let them stand.
