Amazon.com Gorgeous to behold, slow to reveal its full charm and intelligence, Monarch of the Glen is not just for Britcom fanatics. Adapted and updated from the so-called "Highland" novels of Compton MacKenzie (author of Sylvia Scarlett), Monarch concerns the crisis of Archie MacDonald (Alistair Mackenzie), a London restaurateur all set (with his girlfriend Justine, played by Anna Wilson-Jones) to open a hip new eatery when he is interrupted by an emergency call from his home in the Scottish Highlands. There is no emergency, as it turns out, just a gambit by Archie's mother, Molly (the radiant Susan Hampshire), to effect a reconciliation between her son and his cantankerous, relentlessly bitter father, Hector (Richard Briers). The reason: Archie, much to his surprise, must legally assume Hector's longtime role as Laird of Glenbogle, the MacDonalds' 400-year-old, financially strapped 40,000-acre estate. Despite their lengthy estrangement, Hector needs Archie to save the family's honor and assets. The eight episodes in this first season of Monarch of the Glen find the urbane Archie fiercely resisting his obligation at first, then warming to it as Glenbogle's plight becomes more personal--not just an issue of hereditary leadership but of new attachments to the series' endearing, mildly eccentric characters. Among them is Lexie (Dawn Steele), the estate's sexy, street-smart cook; shy Duncan (Hamish Clark), an underachieving, kilt-wearing handyman; leftist land-reformer Katrina (Lorraine Pilkington), warily circling Duncan as a romantic interest; and avuncular, lovably laconic groundskeeper Golly (Alexander Morton). Monarch takes a couple of delightful episodes to introduce these good people and establish story particulars and conflicts. But depth and emotional resonance arrive by the third episode (the MacDonalds have their share of repressed, unspoken old agonies) and remain through the last episode's cliffhanger ending. If that's not enough, the spectacular Highlands scenery is pure eye candy: castles, glimmering lakes, misty hills. One never wants to leave, or to see Monarch end. --Tom Keogh

A wee bit of this is much January 6, 2009 I saw some of these on PBS in years past: I think that the landed gentry of Scotland are somewhat more a through back to times past and we see a modern version trying very hard to stay afloat in modern times. The lives and loves of the son seem to be the major object of these plays, but the foibles of the elders are also visited. I liked the settings, but think that the series kind of demeans the Scottish of the present.
Monarch Of The Glen Series One August 24, 2008 We love this show! Great story lines great scenery! We've enjoyed it highly! Recommended if you need an escape from regular TV- such as "Reality TV Shows".
Monarch of the Glen January 6, 2008 This series has eight episodes on the DVD. It is a strong ensemble drama/comedy.
What I like: The scenery of Scotland. The premise of a 21st Century Scottish Laird having real 21st Century concerns. The estate is not only home but, must also be an ongoing productive concern. We can all identify trying to get credit extension from a bank. You can only be amused thinking of say, Mary Queen of Scots, having to go through this. The actors Hamish Clark as Duncan and Alexander Morton as Golly are compelling characters.
Other matters: I know this is an ensemble series. However, even ensembles need a strong anchor character. For example, Star Trek=Captain Kirk. Alisdair Mackenzie sometimes seems overwhelmed by the other characters. Whether it's, Katrina, Lexie, Duncan, or Hector, his screen oxygen seems to be taken away from him when the others appear. His love interest/business partner, Justine, is not likable. The writers have made his end choices obvious. Having Justine as less of a BOW would have made things better for an already excellent series.
I would recommend the series to those who like ensembles of any genre. Despite my concerns the first season has got me to watching the 2nd season.
Monarch of the Glen December 28, 2007 We were instant fans after the first show. You learn a lot about Scotland's customs and culture from the shows. You will fall in love with all the characters in the shows.
Great series! October 30, 2007 It took a couple of episodes for me to get into this series, but once I got hooked I haven't been able to stop watching! I want to buy the complete series.
