Product Description
Meet Andy Millman, Actor. Never forgets his lines because he never gets any. Andy (Ricky Gervais) is a desperate man. He's been an actor for five years but thanks to his useless agent (Stephen Merchant), he's never done any acting.Instead he's just a lowly film extra, walking around in the background while the stars do their lines. Andy's only friend in the world is Maggie (Ashley Jenson), a fellow extra and a hopeless romantic. While Maggie pursues the man of her dreams, Andy decides he'll do whatever it takes to get himself noticed. Each episode takes place on a different film set and features cameos from guest stars including 'Ben Stiller', 'Samuel L Jackson', 'Ross Kemp', 'Kate Winslet', 'Les Dennis' and 'Patrick Stewart'.

5 out of 5 stars Office boss back with Extras   December 1, 2006
I had the luck to be in England early in 2006 and see the entire Extras series on DVD. Hilarious. More low-key than The Office, funny in a different way, but just as entertaining. Ricky Gervais is excellent as the main character, a struggling actor getting nowhere slowly. He is more self-aware (rather than self-conscious) in this series than he was as Brent and he knows he's a loser. Over the six episodes he manages to drag himself up to a better place. The supporting cast is small, mostly his very funny Scottish gal pal, and each episode boasts a "famous" actor. Several of these are only celebrities in Britain, so much of the joke was lost on me (even with English relatives to explain). North Americans will certainly appreciate the work done here by Ben Stiller and, especially, Patrick Stewart. The show featuring the latter had me crying with laughter. The outtakes are also very funny, but as with The Office's first season DVD, there's not a lot of extras included. One more time: Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Does what any great comedy series should do...   October 21, 2006
Which is?...make you laugh. And, for fans of "The Office" and deadpan English humour who haven't had the opportunity to catch it yet, this DVD is a real treat. Different, opaque to start off with, but almost as good, the six episodes hold together as a "story" and, as you start to understand what's going on, the three main characters just get funnier & funnier. Ricky Gervais' acting is superbly understated, Ashley Jenson is his perfect foil as the "put upon" extra, Stephen Merchant (Gervais' co-writer of The Office) is a perfectly cast comic revelation as his fast-talking but hopeless agent, and the idea of making famous stars make fools of themselves is excruciatingly embarrassing and, as a result, brilliantly funny.

Sure, some episodes work better than others - and, for non-English viewers several of the "star" actors will be totally unknown, making what's going on even more difficult to fathom out - but, with the possible exception of Fawlty Towers, no "classic" English comedy series has hit the bull's-eye every single time and there are more than enough winners here to put it straight into "classic" status. The result? A full evening's worth of great comedy that you'll watch over & over again. Not bad for a follow-up.

4 out of 5 stars Gervais surpasses himself.   October 10, 2006
Okay, let's get it out of the way - I liked the office, but I didn't love it. Yes, it was funny but I didn't see why people raved about it. With Extras, though, Gervais really has written some excellent stuff. The guest stars are really incidental, some barely in the show, but where the show excels is in the dialogue and ideas. Sharp or what?! There are some very inventive and yet, some very ordinary concepts and scenarios explored here, which make it very funny and very easy to relate to. It's no wonder he's appreciated on both sides of the Atlantic. And again, as with the office, he hasn't been greedy and stolen all the laughs for himself, but let the supporting cast have their fair share. If the second series is as good, it'll be a pure joy to watch.
