Amazon.com The lives of two stoic cowboys and five abused Chinese women become intertwined in Walter Hill's sprawling miniseries Broken Trail. Print Ritter (Academy Award winner Robert Duvall) and his nephew Tom Harte (Thomas Haden Church, Sideways) agree to deliver a herd of 500 horses from Oregon to Wyoming. Along the way, they rescue the young women--most of them still just girls--who're being transported to a brothel to have their virginity auctioned off. When the madam sees she is about to lose the girls, she screams at Tom, "What about my property?" He shouts back, "That's the price of being a capitalist, lady." Unable to overcome the language barrier, Print assigns numbers to the girls. Number 3, Sun Foy (Gwendoline Yeo, Desperate Housewives) is the most fearless and perceptive of them. Though the others don't want to be called Number 4--an unlucky numeral in their homeland--Ye Fung (Olivia Cheng), the most tragic of the group, doesn't care. Targeted for her beauty, she finds herself unable to overcome the trauma. The number suits her, in her mind. Along the way, Print and Tom rescue Nola Johns (Greta Scacchi), the proverbial hooker with the heat of gold, who was forced into prostitution after her husband died. The cinematography is gorgeous as the camera sweeps over the lush landscape (the Canadian Rockies subbing in for wild West of the late 1800s) and Hill does a formidable job of pacing this 3-hour drama with just the right balance of dialogue and action. For Duvall, Broken Trail is the last piece to his Western trilogy, which started with the miniseries Lonesome Dove followed by the feature film Open Range. He is instantly likeable as a father figure and the viewer never doubts that his intention for the girls is honorable. As for Haden Church, he has never been as appealing as he is in this role. Gruff and flawed, he softens when he exchanges shy glances with Sun Foy. The trek is long and hard and the unlikely band of travelers will face much hardship. If not as satisfying as the rich, detailed Lonesome Dove, Broken Trail makes up for it with a wonderful storyline and some fine acting by all involved. As for the conclusion, it may surprise some viewers who are expecting a more traditional version of the happy ending. --Jae-Ha Kim

A good Film But too long and NOT FOR THE FAMILY. September 15, 2008 While I enjoyed the movie overall, I felt that it contained many negatives which took away from the overall enjoyment. The DVD is not rated but should be a Mature or an R for nudity and language. What I hoped to be another great western for the family to enjoy turned into an "OMG get the kids out of here" from the time I hit play. It felt like they were trying to stretch out the movie by injecting subplots and majestic scenes instead of building on the main plot Way to much foul language: I understand that such language is and has been around forever, but it should have been toned down in the movie. Nudity: What occurred to the women could have been conveyed without the graphic scenes in the movie. While it did happen why show it in the manner they did? Ever heard of taste? To many plot distractions: The plague carrier, the madam who bought the Chinese girls, the bad guy who was sent to pick up the Chinese girls. The therapeutic paper scene; Come on, is TP that exciting? While I am in no way a prude and never want to see government censors dictating morals to the film industry. I find the modern trend in graphic sex, language, and violence portrayed in the film industry disappointing. I enjoy a good shoot-em up flick packed with action, blood and guts as much as the next person, but do you have to say the F word 5 times in a sentence. Do you have to show tasteless sex scenes? Do you need to show the torturous dismemberment of someone? Why is it so difficult to make a quality film now days? Maybe that's why there are so many remakes of old film coming out of Hollywood. Is the well dry? Is the talent of modern actors so limited that the audience must be distracted? BLAH BLAH BLAH.... I've said my piece.
A Very Good Movie September 12, 2008 This movie looks so good on Blu-ray Disc. The Story is Good!!!
So own Broken Trail today.
Duvall is back on the trail again August 27, 2008 If there are any actors today that can fit into chaffs and cowboy boots, they would be Clint Eastwood & Robert Duvall. Duvall has stated in an interview that of all the roles he has played as a character actor, none fit him better than that of a cowboy. This film is in a sense a continuation of his roles from "Lonesome Dove" to "Open Range" in which he plays a seasoned cowboy who has to fight the bitter elements, human and natural, in order to get the job done. Duvall is ably supported here by Thomas Haden Church who in a break from his comedic roles, is excellent as his long estranged nephew who joins him on the cattle drive. With excellent direction from long time vet Walter Hill and some fine support from Greta Scacchi as a former prostitute with a yen for Duvall, and James Russo & Chris Mulkey as the villains--"Broken Trail" is a trip you don't want to end despite its length (I saw a pre-screening of it before its showing on AMC with Hill in attendance and was impressed).
Easily one of the best-looking, best-acted westerns I've ever seen. August 24, 2008 Both Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church excel and head a marvelous cast in this gripping western that is filled with amazingly beautiful images of the American Northwest. About 3 hours long, but it seems much less. I wanted it to go on and on. Two men with a plan for the future discover just how many curves fate can throw in their direction, and they adapt wonderfully. This is a western that your wife will enjoy as well as yourself; sometimes the heartstrings are being pulled as well as the triggers. The images on Blu-Ray are outstanding.
Broken movie... August 22, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
An interesting western but filled with nudity and actions that bring the quality of he movie down. The acting was less than smooth.
Two cowboys save five chinese girls and have to take them cross country with them on their cattle drive.
I can't recommend this movie to any one.
