More than a spin-off of the Russell T. Davies incarnation of Doctor Who, the BBC series Torchwood is a wholly enjoyable blend of drama, science-fiction thrills, and mature subject matter that never fails to deliver its main purpose: to entertain on a weekly basis. John Barrowman, who captured the imagination of Who fans during the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant eras as 51st-century adventurer Capt. Jack Harkness, returns as the dashing, immortal time traveler; here, he's the head of Torchwood, a covert organization that investigates extraterrestrial and supernatural events on Earth without the help of the British government or United Nations. Eve Myles is a police constable who joins the team after discovering them in the middle of bringing a stabbing victim back to life (in the debut episode, "Everything Changes"), and she brings a decidedly human touch to the Torchwood team's tech-driven investigations. Among the mysteries encountered over the course of the 13-episode series: an alien gas that absorbs humans during sex ("Day One"); a half-human, half-Cyberman female with a connection to Torchwood support man Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd) in "Cyberwoman"; a rash of cannibalistic murders ("Countrycide"); a very different kind of fairies than the ones of legend ("Small Worlds"); and most impressively of all, a skyscraper-sized demon that threatens to plunge the Torchwood team--and the world itself--into chaos ("End of Days," which features an off-screen cameo by a certain Time Lord). What separates Torchwood from the most modern television science fiction (save, say,

Heroes and Battlestar Galactica) is the frankly adult tone of the series: The violence is plentiful and occasionally graphic, and there are frequent bedroom couplings between the team members and supporting players. There's also a maturity to the relationships that exceeds the usual scope of sci-fi, most notably in the affecting "Captain Jack Harkness," which sends him back to the London Blitz, where he meets and falls in love with a handsome American pilot who happens to share his name. Their love affair, like the majority of Torchwood's "grown-up" storylines, is handled with taste and real emotion. Extras on the First Series Blu-ray are remarkably plentiful; entirely new behind-the-scenes featurettes explore the main characters and their major story arcs, location shooting, the impressive SUV that the team drives, and the show's extensive special effects and alien creations. Barrowman also contributes a very funny "Captain's Log," which invites viewers to join him on one of the final shooting days of the series. Torchwood Declassified is a 13-part program that explored each episode on BBC Three and the BBC's Torchwood website. Commentaries are offered for all 13 episodes, with Davies, Barrowman, Myles, Burn Gorman (who plays Torchwood's medical officer, Owen Harper), David-Lloyd, producers Richard Stokes and Julie Gardner, and various episode writers, directors, and producers all lending their voices. A small battery of deleted scenes and outtakes round out this impressive set. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it's not Doctor Who...   November 16, 2008

...that's why the show is called Torchwood.

"Torchwood: outside the government, beyond the police. Tracking down alien life on Earth, arming the human race against the future. The twenty-first century is when everything changes. And you've got to be ready." - Jack Harkness

If you're looking for just a Doctor Who spin-off, try the Sarah Jane Adventures, but if you're looking for something a little darker, more drama, and a lot more interpersonal characters, then Torchwood is for you.

It revolves around Torchwood 3, based in Cardiff, which is set on a Rift in Time and Space. The job of Torchwood is to monitor this rift and seek out any aliens coming through before they get out into the general public.

Torchwood is run by Captain Jack Harkness, who many Doctor Who fans will remember fondly. Gwen Cooper is your lead into the world of Torchwood, and you learn about how it all works along with her. The story line between the characters are are deep and very complex. Love traingles, squares and pentagon's abound.

Now, a word of warning...there are homosexual relationships in this show. Could be because Jack, being from the future and an alien, doesn't see male or female, he just see's life form. If that bothers you, don't bother to watch. Again, this is not your average Doctor Who. This is Torchwood.

5 out of 5 stars Great for mature adults!   November 11, 2008

"Torchwood" is to "Doctor Who" like "The Dark Knight" is to "Batman;" same source material, but different. Dark, intense and incredibly funny; Torchwood is for adults who like SF with a British/Welsh accent. Doctor Who can be intense, just not as consistently or deeply as Torchwood. Yes, there is sex in the series and 95 percent of it is heterosexual. I've gulped a couple of times at how graphic they sometimes make it, but I figure I'm just not use to it. The homosexual sex is pretty much limited to intense "snogging" (kissing.) There is no "gay adgenda" in the show, just diverse people doing their diverse thing. BTW, I'm a 54 y.o., heterosexual, American woman who selfishly wishes John Barrowman was straight and a little older; he's gorgeous and, from what I've seen on the DVDs and his website, is as sweet as he can be. Hooray, Torchwood!

5 out of 5 stars I love this show. Great on HDTV.   October 22, 2008

The first time I learned about Torchwood was on HDNet. I saw a preview. What caught my attention was not the story but the incredible image quality. I thought to myself... I got to watch this, it looks to good on my HDTV. The whole show is shot in True HD... unlike many American tv series that are broadcasted in HD but are not shot in HD. That's why I highly recommend the Bluray version of the serie. After viewing the first episode I got hooked on it. I saw season 1 and 2 and I am waiting for season 3 to come out. If you like time travel, ghosts, ESP, people possessed, monsters, warps and black holes this is the show for you. Special effects are mostly good with some few exceptions that can be easily overlooked by all the good story line and twists the show has to offer. Jack and the rest of the cast, with the exception of Eve Myles and Burn Gorman where at Comicon in San Diego this year (2008). You can view their highly energized panel interview on YOU TUBE search "torchwood comicon".

4 out of 5 stars Stylish, dark, funny, sexy   October 16, 2008

Although I don't usually review films or TV, I thought it was a shame to let one customer's biases color prospective viewers' impressions of this show. It's a well-budgeted, well-produced spinoff of the newer Dr. Who series, and I think it is a must for Dr. Who collectors. The notable difference in the style of storytelling is there is profanity, and yes, adult situations. I don't imagine this will be a problem for anyone who appreciates Dr. Who and British TV in general. If I were to compare it to anything American, maybe Men In Black or X-Files; certainly fans of these should check it out. Torchwood are an organization whose purpose is to keep alien and supernatural phenomena at bay. They have several outposts but the location focused on in this series is in Cardiff, Wales, so the charming Welsh accents are a pleasant bonus. They do a good job - more effective than many sci-fi shows - with contrasting the minutiae of mundane life with the more outrageous plot trajectories of each episode; it helps to provide atmosphere and ground the viewer in the real-world surroundings. I can't stop watching it. (My apologies for not pointing out the specific benefits of Blu-Ray.)

1 out of 5 stars NOT DOCTOR WHO!   October 13, 2008

Torchwood is Russell Davies gay sci fi. A dark sci fi show that is in no way for kids due to being so dark and so many disturbing gay scenes and such. I understand Russell Davies is gay but his gay agenda totally ruins this show. Captain jack is a great character however again the gay agenda set out by davies makes it hard to stomach lots of what this character does here. Another attempt by the pc elite to force mainstream audiences to observes disturbing and gross gay scenes and implications. Its ashame the concept of The torchwood institute is a good one but drowned out by an agenda most people dont want to see nor care about
