Amazon.com essential video Monty Python's Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) directs this wild, wild version of the stories of Baron Munchausen, pushing the limits of 1989 special effects technology to bring us such sights as a horse divided in half and running around in two parts, and a giant Robin Williams with his head flying off his shoulders. Basically, this is a treat for Gilliam fans, as the sustaining idea of the film runs out of steam, and manic energy alone keeps the momentum going. Casual viewers might find it tedious after awhile. There are nice parts for fellow Python Eric Idle, as well as Sting, Alison Steadman, and Uma Thurman as a dazzlingly beautiful Venus on a half-shell. Gilliam had greater artistic and commercial success with Brazil, The Fisher King, and 12 Monkeys. --Tom Keogh

I love this movie! I love the sense that anything can happen (and frequently does), that it's never a waste to dream up impossible things, that it's never too late to recapture the magic. I love watching the baron get younger and younger as the reminiscing part of the movie progresses. Eric Idle plays his role more like a stage actor, but it works in this kind of film, where everything is supposed to be exaggerated. Robin Williams is perfect as the manic King of the moon. Sarah Polley is an excellent young actress. The film has some slow moments, but it's worth waiting to see the next big adventure and the exciting conclusion.
Love this Movie but... June 30, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
First off, I can't find fault with this movie even if I tried, I love the story and then when I discovered the movie I loved how well portrayed this absolutely fantastic story is enacted in an equally fantastic movie. In addition, it is a film that ages well and seems just as fresh and new today as 20 years ago. It is rare that a fantasy film does not come off as dated so long after its release but this one stands the test of time beautifully. My only side-note is that Turner Classic Moves keeps playing an older version of this story that unfortunately was made under nazi rule. Now the nazis and any modern form of racism or prejudice make my blood boil but this film is not about the nazis and oddly enough seems to deliberately avoid the politics of the time. The only faults i could find were those of most movies of that era german, british or american. I do truely believe it deserves some credit for how beautifully it portrays fantasy so many years before our modern special effects. Anyone who loves film history, history in general and the history of special effects should check this german version out as well. I believe it was simply called Munchausen and was made in 1943. If you get mad at all that is was made by a director under nazi rule just think that those couldn't be the best conditions to work under as an artsy. The director of the nazi version of Titanic (a riot of absurd propaganda)was overheard saying the german navy wasn't so hot and was reported and thrown in jail where he mysteriously died. If people watch this and disagree, I am sorry. I likely just watch too much TCM. Oh and the book is such fun as well, it was one of my favorite stories as a child. Check it out.
A must-have classic June 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The wonderful imaginings of Terry Gilliam come to life in this classic fairy tale like story. Of all Gilliam's films, this is the one I think is must watch. Fantastical settings with python humour and superb visual effects of its time and not to mention a floating sentient head with its constantly horny body. Nobody does fantasy stories like this anymore. It is a must have special edition dvd if you want to go back to how fantasy movies like neverending story or even jason and his argonauts were done way before CG special effects even gets its name. Get it, watch it and feel magical all over again.
Blu-ray does this movie justice May 31, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am a huge fan of this movie, and this blu-ray release finally treats it with a little respect. While the audio mix seems a little odd in some scenes (the late Michael Kamen's brilliant score sometimes gets lost in all the sound effects and explosions), the movie looks better than it ever has, comparable to blu-ray releases of more recent movies. Yah, sure, all this eye-popping, hi-def clarity really shows the seams in the dated effects and make-up, but enjoying The Adventures of Baron Munchausen requires such a huge suspension of disbelief in the first place that I don't think many will care, and some might even find these flaws make it MORE endearing. The featurettes and commentary are wonderfully informative and entertaining, but considering this movie's colorful history, I expected just a little more in the special features department. All in all though, it is SO much better than what's been available before.
yes an ORIGINAL movie does exist May 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen You've never seen a Fantasy Movie like this before, absolute top of the line effects when it was made. Plus the producers didn't let CGI take all the glory, both Costumes & Sets are lavish, 2 hours of eye candy for the imagination. Comedy is also in abundance throughout the film. If you like seeing a Movie that's guaranteed different from the studio crank outs, with world class actors & a don't blink your eye story canvas, THIS IS IT
