Amazon.com Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, Jorge Luis Borges, and Guillermo del Toro's own unlimited imagination, Pan's Labyrinth is a fairytale for adults. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) may only be 12, but the worlds she inhabits, both above and below ground, are dark as anything del Toro has conjured. Set in rural Spain, circa 1944, Ofelia and her widowed mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil, Belle Epoque), have just moved into an abandoned mill with Carmen's new husband, Captain Vidal (Sergi Lopez, With a Friend like Harry). Carmen is pregnant with his son. Other than her sickly mother and kindly housekeeper Mercedes (Maribel Verdu, Y Tu Mama Tambien), the dreamy Ofelia is on her own. Vidal, an exceedingly cruel man, couldn't be bothered. He has informers to torture. Ofelia soon finds that an entire universe exists below the mill. Her guide is the persuasive Faun (Doug Jones, Mimic). As her mother grows weaker, Ofelia spends more and more time in the satyr's labyrinth. He offers to help her out of her predicament if she'll complete three treacherous tasks. Ofelia is willing to try, but does this alternate reality really exist or is it all in her head? Del Toro leaves that up to the viewer to decide in a beautiful, yet brutal twin to The Devil's Backbone, which was also haunted by the ghost of Franco. Though it lacks the humor of Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth represents Guillermo Del Toro at the top of his considerable game. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Product Description Newline Pan's Labyrinth (Blu-ray) From acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro ("Blade 2", "Hellboy") comes a dark supernatural epic about the ultimate battle between good and evil. When young Ofelia and her mother go to live with her new step-father on a rural military outpost, she finds herself in a world of unimaginable cruelty. Soon Ofelia finds the creatures of her imagination in which she used to escape have become a reality and she must battle them to save both her mother and herself. In the terrifying battle that ensues, Ofelia soon learns that innocence has a power that evil cannot imagine.

A Hi-Def Masterpiece! October 1, 2008 Firstly, if you have not seen this film, go and rent it from your local video store.
If you have seen this movie, you will know that to see it on Blu-ray is a must.
The detail is what makes these sorts of films so amazing, and detail is shown like no other in this film. The story has the hint of 'Little Red Riding Hood' but is much darker and not for children.
This is Del Toro's masterpiece and I am very excited to hear that he is writing 'The Hobbit'.
This is a must have for any blu-ray collector!
A movie for those who don't like fantasy movies September 29, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love that this movie combined historical fiction with fantasy. It's definitely a movie for people who don't like fantasy movies. My sister HATES fantasy movies like harry potter and lord of the rings, but by the time she watched half of 'pan's labyrinth', she said 'wow, this movie is great!'. I myself have watched it three times this week alone!
Even though the movie is in Spanish, you don't get bogged down by subtitles. It's easy to follow, and you could probably understand what's going on without even reading the subtitles most of the time.
It's an excellent movie - give it a try!
Depth September 29, 2008 Not all people will get this film. It requires person to see the meaning behind the pictures & one should pay close attention that what happens and when. Especially the end of this movie is misunderstood by many.
Give it time, space & Your attention.
Del Toro's Best Film So Far! September 28, 2008 This is a wonderful film that includes magic, mysticism, and terror of a war. A girl whose mother marries a Spanish fascist tries to cope with her stepfather's brutal personality, a servant's assistance to the resistance and her mother's poor health. The magic helps project a world that is much safer and comforting than the real world. A very moving movie and I just love it. The extended DVD provides much more than the film and the extras are good.
Enter the Labyrinth September 28, 2008 "Pan's Labyrinth" is a masterfully executed fairy tale in the old-fashioned tradition: dark and atmospheric, full of stunning imagery, both beautiful and terrifying. With this film, Guillermo del Toro has proved himself a master not only of the visual elements of filmmaking, but also of credible storytelling. The way that certain thematic elements were developed throughout the movie was fascinating, and the film's ultimate emotional resonance is undeniable. One of the most brilliant things about this movie is that the line between the grotesque and fantastic world of the labyrinth and the stark, brutal world of post-Civil War Spain is deliberately blurred. This ambiguity is what ultimately gives the narrative its urgency and the film its deep sense of mystery.
The violence in this film disturbed me quite a bit; on the one hand the depiction of such brutality makes sense in the context of the story, yet I can't help but feel that it was gratuitous at times. I also think that the black-and-white delineation of fascists=bad and socialists=good fails to do justice to the moral and political complexity of the Spanish Civil War. On the whole, though, "Pan's Labyrinth" is a beautifully realized work of great imagination, and definitely worth your time.
