With spinoffs including live action and animated films and television series, comic books, and more, the Highlander franchise has yielded its fair share of noble moments over the years, starting with the original film in 1986. But while Highlander 5: The Source has some cool special effects work and enough video game violence to enthrall adolescent boys, longtime fans agree that this made-for-TV flick is, to put it mildly, no Oscar contender. Adrian Paul, reprising the role he played in Highlander: Endgame (2000) and the Highlander TV series, is Duncan MacLeod, the ageless Scotsman hailing from the 16th Century. The storyline isn't easy to decipher, but it has to do with the imminent cosmic alignment of the planets and other celestial bodies, which will lead to "the moment of the Source," wherein lies the secret to the origin of MacLeod and his crew's immortality. (A note about the film's tagline, "The quest for mortality begins": Seems that being immortal ain't all it's cracked up to be; not only can these guys die, but they are unable to breed, which is a big problem for Duncan and his mortal girlfriend, hence his plan to locate the Source and become, you know, a regular dude.) This is generic comic book stuff, taking place in a crumbling, Road Warrior-esque world populated by characters with names like The Elder, The Guardian, The Watchers, and The Ancient One. The script, by Stephen Kelvin Watkins and Mark Bradley, is fraught with big, portentous statements, while director Brett Leonard seems more interested in staging the next fight sequence than giving us a clue as to what's actually going on. If this is the end of the Highlander story, and many seem to think it will be, fans had every right to hope for a more dignified death knell than The Source. --Sam Graham

2 out of 5 stars I'm a fan, but this movie was a let down   January 4, 2009
I hated the atmospehere as it opened. Reminded me of a bad attempt to used some of the stuff from a Terminator movie, or even Mad Max. There was no originality. I stuck through it and it just got worse. I enjoyed seeing Jim Byrnes as Joe, and of course Adrian Paul as Duncan and Methos...but after I waited years to see a sequel - the writing was bad for this movie. Endgame was a great movie, and so this one is dissapointing. I do like the end though. I wish they could have told us more about his wife - how they met, their life, their marriage, their troubles...seemed like it lacked character development. It's hard to vision Duncan separated from a 'wife'. I do hope they make another movie showing Duncan having a son, and make it more like the series Highlander and the movie Endgame. Then I'd go to the theatre and see it.

1 out of 5 stars There Can Be Only Dumb!   December 31, 2008
I honestly can't even imagine what they were thinking with this hogwash! I for one thought that that it just couldn't get any worse or disaterous than 'Endgame, and well actually this chapter proved to be "every bit as bad. The special effects I'll shred you are great and the actions pretty good but the plot and the acting are just terrible! The story goes with some kind of astronomical happening coming to earth causing something called "The Source" that has the potential to make an Immmortal if chosen through a test to past to become Mortal and in particular have children! From there we meet several one-dimensional(and as it turns out) Immortal types Duncan and Duncan's new love interest. The problem is Duncan wants out of "The Game" and also wants to be a father! What was so unbearable about this movie for example was Duncan's incessant whining and cynicism! He just complains too much! The villain known as" The Guardian" was not only played by an obscure actor but a bad one at that.

1 out of 5 stars Perhaps the worst movie ever   December 31, 2008
If you are a fan of the TV series DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. Besides having basically no plot, bad acting, bad fencing/fighting, bad cinematography, it destroys your favorite characters - figuratively and literally. I knew better than to watch this, but I fell into the trap during the SciFi channel Highlander marathon. It will take a while to get this horrid taste out of my mouth.

4 out of 5 stars What Season 6 Would Have Been   December 29, 2008
At first I had no desire to watch this movie, especially after reading all the awful reviews. However, I took the chance when Sci-Fi Channel reran the movie & enjoyed it. My reason for enjoying it was that I understood where the producers were going with the storyline as it realated to the TV series. Owning the complete Highlander: The Series on DVD, I was able to view the episodes with the added commentaries & saw the direction they had planned for the series had Adrian Paul stayed.
The show was going to change to a darker version with a world falling into chaos and Duncan MacLeod searching for his roots & reason for being. This movie takes up where the series would have eventually gone. It was nice to see that Duncan's character continued where he left off in the series and continues his search & finds out who he really is, a member of the Clan MacLeod, who has a conscious and lives by it.

1 out of 5 stars Highlander ends on a low point   December 27, 2008
This film was a travesty. Thankfully I saw it on television and didn't have to pay to see it or I would have been really ticked off. I enjoyed the original Highlander movie and was a fan of the series thanks in large part to Adrian Paul and the rest of the tv cast. The stories were interesting and I always enjoyed the flashbacks to Duncan's past. There were also great guest stars like Roger Daltry. This film contains NONE of the charm of either the original movie or the tv series. The so called "plot" is incomprehensible and the special effects are laughable at best. The only reason I can think any of the cast made this film was extreme financial distress! Peter Wingfield was trying his best to breathe some life into this cinematic horror, but it was too far gone. Whoever wrote this piece of trash must have been under the influence of some type of mind altering substance. This is truly one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I was very disappointed that such a great series ended so badly.
